Friday Five

1. ZOMG life has seemed so crazy busy for months. Since summer there’s been tons of travel and weekend fun and deck building and parties, and it’s been amazing! But after a wedding this weekend, things should die down for me for a couple of months and I’m pretty thrilled about that.

2. And what I’m going to be doing in those few months of dullness is crafting, sewing, and knitting! I’ve spun up most of the yarn for a lace skirt I’m knitting for Spin In at the end of January, I’ve got two Viking costumes to make for the Hoggetowne Faire in February, and I’m going to make a cool vintage-y holiday vest for Chris to wear to Tuba Christmas in December. Um, er… maybe things aren’t going to be slow at all! The holidays and Sophia’s birthday sleepover will be thrown in there, too, so things may be hopping more than expected.

3. I got a new laptop! It’s very cool as the screen flips kind of disjoints from the base and flips around to turn into a tablet-style computer. But the space bar is hella stiff and it’s driving me fucking crazy right now. I hopeit loosens up after time because this might betheend of me. (I’m leaving thenon-spaces in there sothatyou can seehow crazy thismightmake one go.) And the touchscreen isn’t *quite* as responsive as I’d like it to be. But it’s so flippy! And cool! And I don’t have to use a mouse! So I’m keeping it.

4. Yesterday I wore my Tuesday Tutu to work as part of my Halloween costume. It was a hit at the office mostly because my coworkers are so wonderfully cool.

Wonder Woman Tuesday Tutu

5. Maybe I should have titled this post ‘Friday Four’.

Fiber In-Spiration

I had a revelation at the Florida Fiber In this past weekend. A small revelation, but a revelation nonetheless. You see, I love to spin. I realized this weekend that not only do I love to spin, but I love everything that surrounds the idea and the act of spinning. Especially when another hundred or so people are involved. I love to learn about spinning and I love to pass on to others what I already know.

Lorena and I have been going to the Fiber In off and on for several years now. Along the way I’ve put away any comparisons of this fiber convention to the business and science fiction conventions I’ve been to in the past. This is not that kind of convention. I wouldn’t even call it a convention. I’d call it one long Stitch & Bitch. With occasional meals and constant drinkies. And I like that. Throw in the occasional interesting demo/tutorial, and that’s one damn fine weekend if you ask me.
I spun a lot at the Fiber In this year. I helped Lorena with the Haldecraft booth too, but I mostly spun. And watched other spinners. And talked to other spinners. And talked to potential spinners. I think we recruited a couple of people for our monthly craft group. And all of this filled me with such a warm feeling. Even sitting with another knitter/spinner for an hour at 11pm waiting for someone to come lock the vending room was fulfilling because I got to know my fellow spinner better and we both had some tips and fun stories to trade.
We’ve been back from the Fiber In for well over a week now, and I haven’t stopped. I haven’t stopped spinning, but I also haven’t stopped thinking or talking about spinning. I’ve finished spinning the project that I was working on at the Fiber In, and I’m preparing to knit that yarn up. Just in time to have a beautiful project to show off at the January Spin In in 2014!

How To Make a Hoop Skirt (Also, How NOT To Make a Hoop Skirt)

If you want to make a fabulous, inexpensive, easy hoop skirt click here. Come back here and scroll down, though, for a couple of pointers on the soaker hose. Yes, soaker hose! It’s like magic. I promise. DSCN5648 See how pretty and even the hoops are?! I cannot thank Mango enough for sharing her wisdom with the rest of the Internet world. She saved me much angst and consternation. I would like pass that savings on to you by showing you the first hoop skirt that I made, and allowing you to wallow in the atrociousness of it. The first thing you do *not* want to do to make a hoop skirt is buy this pattern: Simplicity 2621. Buy this pattern for the chemise, for the bum roll, or for the corset, but do not buy this pattern for the hoop skirt. The ‘pattern’ (It’s really more of a pattern-less tutorial.) at deathbychutney.com is much better and easier. DSCN5294 The other thing that you do *not* want to do to make a hoop skirt is to use boning for the hoops. Even if it is the most expensive, highest quality boning at Joanns, and even if you have a kick-ass coupon for it. I can’t speak for the boning sold at high-end dress making supply stores, but don’t go the plastic coiled boning route. Simplicity says it will work, but let me just show you how well it works:

DSCN5575DSCN5567

Pretty sad, isn’t it? All shrinking in on itself. The best possible material to use for your hoops is soaker hose, just like it says at http://www.deathbychutney.com/hoopskirt.htm. It’s also a helluva lot cheaper than 15 yards of crappy boning. What, you haven’t read the tutorial yet? Go! Go now! And when you come back I’ll show you how I made my soaker hose connectors. As you can see here, the only soaker hose available at my local hardware store isn’t one simple tube. That red line down the middle is where the hose is attached to itself on the opposite side. So I wasn’t able to just slit a bit at the end of the hose and tuck it into the other end to make a tube.

DSCN5585 Do I cut off a piece of hose about 4 or 5 inches long. Then cut the red strip out of the middle. I tossed the red center and trimmed up each side strip a little bit. DSCN5588 Then I shoved each little strip into one end of the hoop hose, and joined the other end of the hoop in the same fashion. I did add a couple of wraps of duck tape at the seam just to make sure everything stayed stable. And it did! DSCN5592 Now you have the information to go forth and hoop skirt! I gotta tell you, the sense of accomplishment of getting that thing right after that first horrible skirt was overwhelming. Deathbychutney’s tutorial really saved my day and my sanity!

On Chemises and Shoes

When we last saw our hero, she had finished sewing her Faire-going chemise, and was ready to add a touch of lace to the edges.

DSCN5713

With that done, she was ready to move on to making her other undergarments!

I had every intention of making the corset next. But I wanted to get good boning for that project, and would have to wait for it to arrive in the mail before construction could be completed. I did cut out most of the corset fabric, but due to time constraints decided not to finish it for the Medieval Faire. The boning has been acquired, though, so I’ll tell you all about that when I actually sew the garment.

So here I am, chemised, ready for the rest of my costume! Because the neckline was so wide, the chemise kept slipping off my shoulders. So I put my little tube of sock glue to good use! A dab of that on my skin, then pressing the shoulder of the chemise down on the glue did the trick!

Ohohoh, one other note on the chemise. If you are using Simplicity pattern 2621 for your chemise, I would suggest making the facings quite a bit longer than the pattern calls for. You won’t be able to add much to the sides since you’ll run into the arm area, but adding a couple of inches to the front and the back would help keep them tucked in neatly.

DSCN5644

As you can see I put my shoes on first, as I knew my feet would soon be hard for me to reach. On faire shoes: I spent a lot of time tracking down the most perfect medieval shoes, searching thrift stores far and wide. I ended up with a pair that I was *very* happy with the looks of, but they were a bit pinchy in the toe. I used a wonderful idea found on YouTube to stretch them out: Mix one part isopropyl alcohol with three parts water. Spray this on the leather shoes until well moistened, and wear the shoes until they are dry.

The problem came to be that with all of that effort, the shoes were negligible. You see, once I got my big long skirt on, my shoes never showed. Not once. Ok, well once when my friend Kelly asked what kind of shoes I was wearing. She agreed that they were perfect! And for $3.50 I’m not complaining, especially since they didn’t hurt my feet at all even after wearing them tromping around the fairgrounds all day long. But next time, I won’t be quite so picky about what shoes I’m wearing.

Happy Robbie Burns Day to ya!

On this fine morn of the anniversary of the birth of the national bard of Scotland, I perused the Robert Burns website for a nice quote to put on my Facebook wall. Lo and behold I came across this fine poem written in 1792 that I would like to share with you, constant reader. Enjoy it to your liking, and raise a cup of kindness to Mr. Burns today!

Bessy And Her Spinnin’ Wheel

O Leeze me on my spinnin’ wheel,
And leeze me on my rock and reel;
Frae tap to tae that cleeds me bien,
And haps me biel and warm at e’en;
I’ll set me down and sing and spin,
While laigh descends the simmer sun,
Blest wi’ content, and milk and meal,
leeze me on my spinnin’ wheel.

On ilka hand the burnies trot,
And meet below my theekit cot;
The scented birk and hawthorn white,
Across the pool their arms unite,
Alike to screen the birdie’s nest,
And little fishes’ caller rest;
The sun blinks kindly in the beil’,
Where blythe I turn my spinnin’ wheel.

On lofty aiks the cushats wail,
And Echo cons the doolfu’ tale;
The lintwhites in the hazel braes,
Delighted, rival ither’s lays;
The craik amang the claver hay,
The pairtrick whirring o’er the ley,
The swallow jinkin’ round my shiel,
Amuse me at my spinnin’ wheel.

Wi’ sma’ to sell, and less to buy,
Aboon distress, below envy,
wha wad leave this humble state,
For a’ the pride of a’ the great?
Amid their flairing, idle toys,
Amid their cumbrous, dinsome joys,
Can they the peace and pleasure feel
Of Bessy at her spinnin’ wheel?

Shifting

So I was looking at the kind of dress that I want to wear to the Hoggetowne Faire on our big trip with Sophia this year. I want Elizabethan style with a low, wide neckline. And I was thinking about what the hell kind of bra I’d need to wear with it, because one of the downfalls of aging is that I now have to wear a bra when I dress up. Anyhoo, no modern bra that I could think of would work with this neckline. Strapless bras don’t count anymore, as they don’t work so much after the age of 30. Well what would a lady of the time wear with her fancy dress? A corset,of course! But before I jump all in with both feet, I needed to warm up the sewing machine with a simple shift to wear under the corset. This will keep the lining of the corset clean, and cut down on the chafing.

Even though it won’t show at all, I wanted a pretty bit of fabric for my shift. It’s funny how I’m so attracted to white on white designs even though I don’t wear white at all. Ever. So I picked up this white on white fabric that kind of coordinates with the fabric I chose for my corset. The thing abut this fabric is that because the design is printed on the fabric, it makes the fabric quite a bit more heavy than I imagined. I’ll still use it, but you might want to watch for that if you make a shift. I think I’ll wear the garment as a nightgown for the next couple of months in hopes that washing it a lot will wear the fabric out some and make it lighter.
DSCN5302 (1024x768)

I used one of the patterns that I picked up on mega-sale at Joann Fabrics for the shift. As usual, I fell between sizes and cut out the larger size. And as usual it was way too big for me. Better too big than too small, though! Luckily this little under dress has very simple construction, so I just shimmed up a couple of the side seams, then put some cute pleats on the neckline in both the front and the back. I won’t be able to get away with this kind of fix for the real dress, though, so I see an entire bolt of muslin in my future.

Next time I’m at the fabric store I’ll pick up some sweet, fine lace to add to the neckline and cuffs and it’ll be all done! I’ll throw up a couple of more pics then.

The Next Big Thing

I’m plugging right along on my 50 By 50 list! I’ve been checking small things off here and there after the first big check mark of restyling my wedding dress. And now Chris and I are honing in on the next big thing: Item #45 Do something fun and cool with Sophia.

Sophia is our oldest niece. She’s nearly ten years old, and lives in Jacksonville with her parents and grandparents. We’ve decided to sweep the girl away for a weekend of Medieval fun and festivities in Gainesville.

We plan to send Sophia a scroll from ‘the king’ about a week before the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire. This fancy note will tell her that she has been selected to travel back in time to visit the king and queen, accompanied by two experienced time travelers. She’ll be instructed to be ready at a certain time on February 4th, dressed in appropriate period attire (Chris’ mom, Sophia’s grandmother, has graciously agreed to construct a Ren Faire costume for Sophia on the sly.), with an overnight bag packed for the trip. Then Chris and I will appear on her doorstep at the quoted time dressed in our full regalia of puffy sleeves, clan tartan, and fancy bonnets to sweep her away to the Medieval towne of Gainesville!

2003 – Our first Hoggetowne Faire together
I took advantage of the recent JoAnn Fabrics’ pattern sale to stock up on Renaissance patterns for both me and Chris, and I’ve started a Pinterest board with inspirational costumes. Chris will wear his dress kilt (Totally not cannon, but it sure is sharp looking!) and I’ll make him a fancy waistcoat and short cape. I want to wear a huge dress with fur sleeves and of course I’ll need an entire set of underclothes as well. I better go get started. I’ve got a lot of sewing to do in the next ten weeks!

A Tisket, A Tasket

If you follow me on Twitter, you might know that I love my bicycle. It’s a men’s beach cruiser that I bought secondhand because I wasn’t sure if I’d use it much. Turns out I use it a more than I thought I would! Chris and I bike on the Hawthorne Trail once or twice a week when we are on a roll. A couple of friends often join us, and that makes it even more fun. I’m no racer, and I don’t usually average more than five miles, but I do enjoy getting out and getting some good, clean exercise. It helps that the trail is a beautiful area with lots of trees and the occasional deer or sandhill crane (Have you seen one of those on the ground? They are HUGE!).

SAMSUNG

As you can see, I’ve decked Neil (I name most every object that I own.) out pretty well with a fancy basket and a happy brass bell. But he just needed… more. Not really more bling, but something more happy. Something girly. He needed a basket liner!
I had some good ideas, but I wanted someone else’s perspective as well. I found a great tutorial at Ruffled Sunshine that I used as a template. Here’s a note if you want to make a basket liner: Make the liner in two pieces like Ruffled Sunshine does. I made one big trapezoid instead of two, and it doesn’t fit nearly as well as hers does. I added pockets all around one side of the liner, as well as little loops for my key fob, and two fabric-covered elastic bands to hold water bottles.

DSCN5188

It turned out great! I love it! But then I realized my little basket needed even *more*. Just a little more. A flower? A string of pennants? A yo-yo! Miss Sews-It-All makes a yo-yo that fit the bill perfectly. I happened to have some coordinating fabric in my stash, and whipped up three adorable yo-yos on wire stems.

DSCN5180

Then I wired them directly to the front of my bike basket. Cute as a button! I can’t wait to get my bike back on the trail and show it off!

A Large Meal on a Small Plate. Plus Dessert.

I’m in a make funk. I haven’t been doing much of anything lately. Socially, I am. I’m meeting friends for lunch, going biking, clogging with my class. I’m even going out to an actual rock and roll show this week! And of course I get plenty done at work. But other than that, not much of anything. I mean around the house. I mean craft-wise. On my weekends. On my day off. Nothing.

It’s not that I don’t have anything to do. You should see my list! It’s huge! And I think that’s it – it’s too huge. I’m overwhelmed. There is too much food on the plate in front of me. Every time I turn around there’s a new, fun project staring me in the face. Appetizer! Drinks! Dessert! And I want to eat it all! Right then and there! So I do some research and figure out where I need to start on this new project, but I put it off. I know I can’t begin a new project because I have too many works in progress right now and I should be dedicating my time to them. I’m already full. I need to digest. But I just can’t seem to get up and get done what needs to be done.

I need focus. I need motivation. I need more than just a list of things to do. Do I need a reward? Will that get me off my butt? Rewards are hard for me, though. I’m very good at treating myself in a pretty special way. I’m so worth it! I eat what I please when I please, I drink champagne on a regular basis, I buy what I want when I want to, and I veg in front of the television when I have time to relax. What kind of reward can I give myself that I don’t give myself every time I feel like it?

What I really want is for the completion of the project to be my reward. That’s what makes me feel good! That’s what gives me self-confidence and pride in what I do! Wearing a new pair of handknit socks, looking at a nicely weeded flower garden, or even peeing into a toilet that I’ve just cleaned makes me happy. The more often that I make these rewards for myself, the more I’ll be reminded that the result *is* the reward. And the more likely it is that I’ll continue to present those rewards to myself.

Today is Tuesday, the beginning of my work week. A good day to begin rewarding myself again. When I hit ‘publish’ on this post I’ll be able to check the first item off of my list for today, and I’ll have the reward of knowing that I’ve worked some things out in my head through writing about it. That’s a good feeling. One that I’ll want to have again tomorrow.

1 Down, 49 To Go

This past weekend I completed my first 50 By 50 item! #12 is ‘Wear my wedding dress again’, and I did that very thing on Saturday night at my 25th high school reunion. I knew that I was overdressing for the event, and I warned my classmates of that. Regardless, I was a bit nervous about wearing so much frillery to what was essentially a blue jeans kind of function.

But my fears were put to rest when I passed a 12 year old girl on the sidewalk after parking the car. She saw me, her eyes opened wide, and she said, ‘I know I don’t know you, but I love your dress!’ As long as I have the unsolicited pre-teen (or even the pre-pre-teen) vote I’m happy! So I walked into my reunion with my head held high, and received several compliments. Yay!

So without further ado, here are the formal pics of what I felt was my grown-up prom. I’ve included a couple of photos of the original dress as a ‘before’ comparison. I’m really pleased with the result, and am looking forward to wearing my wedding dress again and again!
